Nine Cities for Medical Travel in China: How to Match the City to the Question
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, Hangzhou and Suzhou are nine workable bases for a health question, not a ranking. Match the clinical question, the pace of the trip and a written hospital quotation before you book.

China's public tertiary care is not arranged around one best city. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, Hangzhou and Suzhou are nine places where international visitors regularly combine a health question with a trip. The useful match is between the clinical question, the kind of days you want around the visit, and what a specific department can offer on your dates.
This page is an orientation. It deliberately names no hospital. A city's reputation is not a booking, and it is not evidence that a particular specialty, clinician or package is open to you. Confirm the department, the language plan, the written quotation and how results will be explained before you travel.
Quick answer
- Match the city to the question, not to a ranking. An unresolved or multi-system problem is a different trip from a preventive checkup.
- The service setting matters as much as the map. An ordinary checkup centre, an international department and a private clinic in the same city do not share a price, a language arrangement or a report format. Public, Private or International explains that choice.
- There is no single national checkup price. Verified starting prices, where we publish them, are on our health screening overview. The figure that governs is the hospital's written, itemised quotation.
- Leave real time around the visit. Health screening timelines in China separates a short stop from a stay that includes sedation or pathology. A new, severe or worsening problem is not a checkup: in China, call 120.
How to choose before you choose a skyline
- What has to be answered? A preventive panel, a second look at records you already have, a sedated endoscopy, or a traditional Chinese medicine course are different visits. Planning a Health Checkup in China is how to decide which tests earn a place on the list.
- What kind of days sit around the appointment? A business diary, a family circuit and a quiet recovery week do not want the same city.
- What must be true on the day? Passport registration, fasting instructions, an escort after sedation, the language of the report, and how the images will be handed over.
The nine cities at a glance
| City | What visitors usually come to ask about | The kind of stay it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing | Complex internal medicine, neurosurgery, rare disease, a second look when the diagnosis is still unclear | A large academic capital, dry for much of the year, built around museums and historic neighbourhoods |
| Shanghai | Cardiology, digestive endoscopy, oncology questions, and international departments used to insurer paperwork | Business travel, walkable transit, and a language plan you confirm before you fly |
| Guangzhou | Respiratory medicine, ophthalmology, and hospital-based traditional Chinese medicine beside a southern food culture | Arrivals through Hong Kong or Southeast Asia, especially in the milder winter |
| Shenzhen | Newer campuses and digital record workflows, often on a short trip from Hong Kong | A modern campus and a tightly planned stop, with fasting and results still given their own time |
| Chengdu | High-volume tertiary care for western China, including hepatobiliary surgery, at a slower daily pace | Longer stays, teahouse neighbourhoods, and trips that continue into western Sichuan |
| Chongqing | Trauma care, cardiovascular services and interventional ultrasound in a mountain city | A practical public-hospital quotation and a river city of stairs and night views |
| Xi'an | Orthopedics, complex digestive endoscopy and rehabilitation inside a historic walled centre | A Silk Road itinerary in which a morning appointment sits beside heritage sites |
| Hangzhou | Gastrointestinal surgery and organised screening, with a lake and tea hills for the other days | A structured evaluation and quiet walks, not a longer list of tests |
| Suzhou | Bone and joint care, haematology and rehabilitation, about 25 minutes by high-speed rail from Shanghai | A garden city as a base, with a later departure if the visit includes sedation |
These rows are starting points. Scanner models, protocols, appointment access and who reports the study differ by hospital and by department. Confirm the test and the team. Do not infer quality from the city.
Beijing
Beijing concentrates national teaching hospitals and referral panels. People with an ambiguous, multi-system problem often ask to come here because more than one specialty can be asked to read the same record. That is a reason to send the records and request a department. It is not a reason to expect a named professor, or to treat the capital as the default for a routine checkup.
The city is large. Hotels and hospitals are often far apart, and the climate is dry for much of the year. It suits visitors who want the appointment and the museums, and who have left time to get between them.
Shanghai
Shanghai is the city people choose when they already have an insurer, a corporate diary, or a first trip to China and they want the paperwork spelled out. International departments here are used to appointment requests and to questions about direct billing. Direct billing still exists only for the combination of insurer, policy and department that both sides confirm. Ask for that confirmation in writing.
The clinical work visitors name most often is cardiovascular care, digestive endoscopy, endocrine and metabolic disease, and neurology. Whether any of those doors is the right one is a clinical question, answered from your records rather than from the skyline.
Guangzhou
Guangzhou is the usual southern gateway, including for travellers who come through Hong Kong. Respiratory medicine and ophthalmology are the specialties international patients most often ask about. The city also has a long everyday relationship with traditional Chinese medicine. A soup is not a treatment. If you want TCM, book a clinical visit in a hospital department. Traditional Chinese Medicine 101: visiting a hospital draws that line.
Winters are milder than in the north, which is why some families plan the screening here.
Shenzhen
Many of Shenzhen's public hospitals were built later than the old campuses of Beijing and Shanghai, and a lot of the record-keeping is digital from the start. Cross-border travellers use the city because the journey from Hong Kong is short. A short journey is not a reason to compress fasting, sedation or a conversation about a result. Ask what has to be finished before you leave.
Chengdu
Chengdu is a clinical anchor for western China, and the days around a hospital visit move more slowly than on the coast. Visitors who want a thorough public-hospital evaluation and unhurried time โ teahouses, parks, a trip onward โ often prefer it to a tighter coastal diary. The quotation still has to name the hospital, the items and the exclusions. A regional city is not a discount.
Chongqing
Chongqing pairs large teaching hospitals with a mountain city of rivers and stairs. Trauma care, cardiovascular services and interventional ultrasound are what visitors ask about. Public fees are set locally, so a Chongqing quotation and a Shanghai quotation are not comparable until both are itemised. Compare the lines, not the reputations.
Xi'an
Xi'an is the inland and Silk Road option: a walled historic centre, a dry climate, and hospitals that visitors ask about for orthopedics, digestive endoscopy and rehabilitation. It works when the appointment is one morning inside a cultural trip, and when you have already confirmed that the department you need is seeing patients from abroad on those dates.
Hangzhou
Hangzhou is the choice when the days around the checkup matter as much as the checkup. The lake, the tea hills and a compact centre make quiet time easy to plan. Gastrointestinal surgery and organised screening are the clinical reasons visitors give. A peaceful setting does not make an extra scan a good idea. Choose tests from your history. Planning a Health Checkup in China is the method.
Suzhou
Suzhou is close to Shanghai by high-speed rail, often about 25 minutes from station to station, and it feels like another city: canals, gardens, a residential pace. Visitors ask about bone and joint care, haematology and rehabilitation. The rail link is not a plan to finish a sedated procedure and make an international flight that afternoon. Confirm when the hospital expects you to be finished, then add the train, the airport and a margin. A later departure is the safer default. Turning a Trip to China Into a Planned Health Stop is about fitting a screening into a real itinerary, and a morning health checkup, station by station describes the order of a preventive visit.
A simple way to choose
| If this is the priority | Start by looking at |
|---|---|
| An unresolved or multi-system question | Beijing or Shanghai, and send the records before you ask for a date |
| Insurer paperwork and a confirmed language plan | Shanghai or Shenzhen, and ask the department rather than the city |
| A slower public-hospital stay | Chengdu or Chongqing, with an itemised quotation |
| Milder winter weather and a southern gateway | Guangzhou |
| A historic city and a morning appointment | Xi'an or Beijing |
| Quieter days beside water or gardens | Hangzhou or Suzhou |
If two cities both fit the question, choose the one whose airport, rail and hotel pattern you can live with. Then let the hospital's written answer decide.
Where PriumCare fits in China
We do the administrative half. Where that support is confirmed in your service scope, PriumCare can help you set the clinical question against these cities, request an itemised quotation, arrange the appointment and the language support, and put the reports into a form your own doctor can use.
We do not diagnose, we do not treat, and we do not rank cities or departments. The hospital's own quote governs what you pay. PriumCare does not mark up hospital fees. For a new, severe or worsening problem, call 120 or go to the nearest capable emergency department. A city guide is not an emergency plan.
Frequently asked questions
Are hospitals in Chengdu or Xi'an less well equipped than hospitals in Beijing?
Not as a rule. Major tertiary hospitals in these cities use modern scanners and look after large numbers of ordinary and complex cases. The model of scanner, the protocol, the appointment and the person who reports the study still differ by hospital and by department. Confirm the test and the team. Do not infer quality from the city.
Can I have a checkup in Hangzhou or Suzhou and fly from Shanghai?
Often, once the hospital has told you when you should be finished and you have allowed for the train, the airport and a finding that needs a conversation before you go. Do not put an international departure on the afternoon of a sedated procedure, or on a visit whose results you still need explained. Plan a later departure.
Do I need Mandarin for a checkup in Chengdu, Chongqing or Xi'an?
On an ordinary public floor, much of the signage and the desk conversation is in Mandarin. Some departments arrange interpreters or translated reports, and some do not. Confirm the language plan, who pays for it, and the language of the report before you book. A routing sheet with room numbers helps on the day. It does not replace consent, or a result you understand.
Should I pick a city because it is known for one specialty?
Only when that specialty is the question you are actually bringing, and only after the hospital has accepted the request. A reputation is not an appointment. If you are well and you want a preventive checkup, compare the tests, the quotation and the days you have. That comparison is what Planning a Health Checkup in China is for.
Where do I see a real price?
Not in this article. Starting prices we have verified are listed by city on our health screening overview. The amount you pay comes from the hospital's written, itemised quotation: hospital, date, currency and exclusions. Two totals without that list cannot be compared.
