Three Inbound Patient Groups in China: How to Choose a City and a Trip

As of 6 October 2026, overseas Chinese, first-time visitors and patients from countries where care is already available plan a China trip differently. A group label does not choose the hospital, the visa or the bill.

    Published October 6, 2026

Direct answer. As of 6 October 2026, people who travel to mainland China for care fall into three planning groups: overseas Chinese, first-time visitors from Belt and Road and other emerging-market countries, and patients from countries where care is already available who are comparing one named service. The group describes the trip. It does not diagnose anyone, and it does not choose a city, a department or a price.

Press accounts of a 2025 National Health Commission report on foreign-related medical services describe 1.28 million international-patient visits at key foreign-related hospitals that year. Those accounts also mention a 73.6 percent change over three years, but they do not attach that percent to the same measure, so this page does not use it.

An approval, a pilot list or a familiar city is not yet an appointment.

    Overseas Chinese

The usual situation is a person who lives outside mainland China, reads Chinese, and is combining a family visit with a checkup, dental care, eye care, a joint question or an oncology follow-up. Familiarity with the language lowers one barrier. It does not replace a written record, a named department or a written estimate.

Start from the city where family already is, then ask whether that city has the department for this question. Nine cities for medical travel in China is a map of what to verify, not a league table. A preventive checkup and an operation are different stays. Health screening timelines in China describes the shape of a checkup. The hospital, not this page, sets both calendars.

Many of these travellers are paying themselves. Ask for a written estimate before flights, and read paying for healthcare and travel in China for how a hospital bill and daily spending are different problems.

A first visit from a Belt and Road or other emerging-market country

The usual situation is a first trip, with the record, the language, the lodging and the person who meets the patient all still open. The useful request is a written path: what the record must contain, which department would see it, what that department would not take, and what the estimate includes.

Do not travel for an emergency. In China, call 120.

A complex question belongs with a department that has accepted the record, whether that department is in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or another city. Some provinces publish pilot lists of hospitals that offer an international service. Use the current list, then confirm the department. A city slogan is not that confirmation. Public, private or international hospital services explains what those labels mean.

CAR-T and other newly authorised medicines are not a reason to fly on a headline. Innovation drug access in China records what an NMPA authorisation does and does not decide. The Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Hainan has a separate rule for some drugs and devices that are not yet in general mainland use. A named product for a named person is decided under that rule and by the treating clinicians. It is not a general entitlement.

Patients from countries where care is already available

This group is not coming because care does not exist at home. They are comparing a named service: a traditional Chinese medicine visit, a recovery stay, or a treatment their own clinician has already discussed. An urgent or worsening illness is not a tourism itinerary.

A TCM or recovery stay is its own trip. The clinician who will see the person sets the length. Planning a health checkup in China is the right starting page when the question is preventive tests rather than a treatment. When to start planning is the order of work before any of these trips.

    Choosing a city

    Ask three things.

    • What is the clinical question, in one sentence, and which record supports it?
    • How long can this person actually stay, once the hospital has named the dates?
    • Is there already a family address, or is every practical step still to be arranged?

A difficult question needs a department that provides that service. A checkup can be planned in a city that confirms the package. A TCM stay is a third kind of trip. Book the clinical review before the flights. When to start planning puts that order on one page.

    Before you travel

Bring the diagnosis, imaging, laboratory results and pathology, in a language the receiving clinician can read. A second opinion, on this page, means a clinician who may actually see the person reviews that record and says whether a trip is appropriate. It is not a chat reply, and it is not a promise of admission.

China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy, expanded to 57 countries on 20 August 2026, lets eligible ordinary-passport holders with a confirmed onward ticket enter through designated ports for a transit stay. The National Immigration Administration describes permitted activities as tourism, business, exchange and family visits. It is not a medical visa. Confirm the category that matches a treatment stay before you rely on it. The practical notes are in visa guidance for a China medical trip.

    What the bill is

Medical care is billed by the hospital. A coordination fee, if there is one, is a separate written agreement. Ask what is included before you pay either one. Anything that cannot be itemised before travel should stay unresolved on paper, not in the departure lounge.

    Where PriumCare fits in China

PriumCare coordinates the record, the language, the appointment and the collection of reports when that work is confirmed in your service scope. We do not diagnose, we do not treat, and we do not decide whether a medicine, a checkup or a trip is appropriate. PriumCare does not mark up hospital fees. For a sudden or worsening emergency, call 120.

Are these three groups a clinical classification?

No. They describe how the trip is usually planned. A clinician still has to accept the person and the record. Two people in the same group can need different cities and different care.

Does reading Chinese mean an overseas Chinese traveller can skip a written plan?

No. Language removes one barrier. The department, the dates and the written estimate are still separate. A family address is a useful place to start, not a hospital booking.

Does the Boao Lecheng pilot zone entitle a visitor to a drug that is not yet generally marketed in mainland China?

No. The zone has its own rule for some products. Use of a named product for a named person is decided under that rule and by the treating clinicians.

Is the 240-hour visa-free transit stay a plan for treatment?

No. It is a transit permission for eligible nationalities who already hold an onward ticket. A treatment stay needs its own visa check, against the current National Immigration Administration rule.

Does this page promise a shorter wait than care at home?

No. A hospital offers a date, or it does not. This page does not compare queues and it does not promise a calendar.

    Who sends the bill?

The hospital bills the medical care. Any coordination fee is separate and agreed in writing beforehand. Ask for the included and excluded items before you travel.
