Planning medical care in China from Australia

A guide for Australia-based travellers: check the full travel budget, planned-care insurance questions, report handover and recovery arrangements before visiting China.

China Medical Tour helps with non-clinical planning and coordination. Hospitals decide which examinations or treatments are appropriate and confirm appointments. Entry requirements depend on your passport and itinerary; insurance cover depends on your policy and proposed care.

    What to check before deciding

Start with the questions that matter before arranging care in China.

    Compare your actual Australian options

Use your available public or private care options and a written China scope. Include travel, accommodation, translation and possible extra care rather than comparing procedure prices alone.

Ask about cover for the purpose of the trip

Check planned overseas treatment, complications and evacuation with your insurer. Do not assume Medicare or ordinary holiday insurance covers the proposed care in China.

Leave travel decisions to confirmed care needs

Discuss recovery and fitness to fly with the treating clinician before fixing a return date. Ask your clinician in Australia about follow-up and the reports needed for handover.

Compare the whole trip, not just a procedure

Ask for a written scope and quote. CMT service fees are separate from medical, medicine, travel and accommodation costs. For Care Starter only, CMT collects hospital registration separately at actual cost and pays it to the hospital. Other hospital charges are paid directly to the provider. Standalone accompaniment is quoted by and paid directly to the companion. Confirm translation requirements and any extra costs before agreeing.

    From planning to returning home

    1. 1

      Before booking travel

Agree on the coordination scope, required records and costs. Wait for hospital confirmation and discuss a suitable travel plan with your clinician.

    2. 2

      During the visit

Ask the hospital about additional tests, costs and report availability. Confirm which documents can be supplied in English and which need separate translation.

    3. 3

      Before returning home

Request reports, imaging, treatment details and follow-up instructions. Arrange ongoing care with your local clinician and ask the treating team about fitness to fly.

    Questions before you travel

Can I combine a checkup with a holiday?

Discuss the proposed schedule first. Preparation, extra examinations and clinical advice may change the itinerary; do not assume every visit fits within a sightseeing trip.

Will the reports be usable in Australia?

Ask your Australian clinician about the required records, imaging and language. Confirm with the hospital what it supplies and whether translation must be arranged separately.
