Planning medical care in China from the United States
A practical guide for US-based travellers: compare total costs, check insurance questions and plan records and follow-up before arranging care in China.
China Medical Tour helps with non-clinical planning and coordination. Hospitals decide which examinations or treatments are appropriate and confirm appointments. Entry requirements depend on your passport and itinerary; insurance cover depends on your policy and proposed care.
What to check before deciding
Start with the questions that matter before arranging care in China.
Compare a complete self-pay budget
Compare the written China quote with your actual US options. Include flights, accommodation, translation, time away and possible additional care; a lower procedure price alone does not establish a saving.
Ask your insurer about planned overseas care
Ask for written answers about prior approval, exclusions, complications and follow-up in the US. Do not treat a domestic insurance card as confirmation of overseas cover.
Identify who will provide follow-up at home
Before departing, ask your US clinician what records they need and whether they can provide follow-up. Request copies of reports and imaging from the treating hospital.
Compare the whole trip, not just a procedure
Ask for a written scope and quote. CMT service fees are separate from medical, medicine, travel and accommodation costs. For Care Starter only, CMT collects hospital registration separately at actual cost and pays it to the hospital. Other hospital charges are paid directly to the provider. Standalone accompaniment is quoted by and paid directly to the companion. Confirm translation requirements and any extra costs before agreeing.

From planning to returning home
- 1
Before booking travel
Agree on the coordination scope, required records and costs. Wait for hospital confirmation and discuss a suitable travel plan with your clinician.
- 2
During the visit
Ask the hospital about additional tests, costs and report availability. Confirm which documents can be supplied in English and which need separate translation.
- 3
Before returning home
Request reports, imaging, treatment details and follow-up instructions. Arrange ongoing care with your local clinician and ask the treating team about fitness to fly.
Questions before you travel
Can you tell me how much I will save?
Only comparable written scopes can support a meaningful cost comparison. We do not publish a blanket saving percentage or assume your US out-of-pocket cost.
Will my US insurer reimburse the visit?
Your insurer must confirm cover for your policy and proposed care. CMT cannot approve reimbursement or promise that a claim will be accepted.
