A Morning Health Checkup in China, Station by Station
What a preventive checkup morning in a Chinese public hospital usually involves: identity, fasting tests, ultrasound, then the stations that do not require fasting. Your routing sheet overrides this sample order.
Published September 30, 2026
A preventive health checkup in a Chinese public hospital is often run as a circuit of stations on one floor or in one building, rather than as separate appointments across the city. That is the practical difference many visitors notice. It is not a promise that your visit will follow the clock below, or that every package includes every station.
Timing depends on the hospital, the queue, the tests, any interpreter, and what happens if a clinician adds or removes an item. Keep the rest of the day free until you are told the visit is complete. For how to choose the tests, and why a longer list is not a better checkup, read Planning a Health Checkup in China. For how this morning sits inside a trip, read health screening timelines in China.
Quick answer
- The usual order is identity, fasting tests, then tests that do not require fasting. The hospital's written instructions override any sample order in this article.
- Some centres group the stations so you are not crossing the city. Others send you to another building for CT or endoscopy. Ask which kind you have booked.
- Some results appear on a portal before others. A blood count is not the same document as a signed imaging report or a translated summary. Confirm the format, the language and the turnaround before you book.
- A checkup is for people who are well enough to be scheduled. Chest pain, trouble breathing, new weakness, heavy bleeding, confusion or anything else that feels urgent is an emergency. In China, call 120.
Why the visit can be compact
In many health systems, a metabolic panel, an ultrasound and a chest CT are separate referrals in separate buildings. In a Grade 3 Class A (三级甲等) health-management centre, those stations are often placed on one circuit so a preventive package can be done in a single attendance.
Two limits sit on top of that convenience.
- The circuit is local. Another hospital, even in the same city, may split the same tests across sites and mornings.
- Compact is not the same as complete. Tumour-marker blood tests, where a package includes them, are not a general cancer screen in people without symptoms. An unexpected number often buys further tests rather than an early answer. Low-dose chest CT has eligibility criteria in international guidance, built around age and smoking history. It should not be described as a universal add-on. Both points are set out in Planning a Health Checkup in China.
The night before
Follow the hospital's sheet if it disagrees with this list. A typical preparation for a fasting package is:
- A light evening meal, without a heavy or very fatty dinner.
- No alcohol with that meal.
- Fasting from the time the hospital states. Small sips of water are often allowed, and sometimes they are not. The sheet wins.
- Clothes without metal zips, underwires or decorative fasteners, so an ECG or a CT does not require a full change of clothes.
- Your passport, a list of medicines, and any instruction you have been given about diabetes drugs, anticoagulants or pregnancy.
If sedation or contrast is even a possibility, say so the day you book. Both change the preparation, the escort rule and whether you can travel afterwards. Gastroscopy in China is the article to read before you add a scope to this morning.
A sample morning, not your morning
The sequence below is one common arrangement. Your routing sheet, with its room numbers, is the document to follow. Clock times move when a queue does.
1. Identity and a routing sheet. You present your passport. Staff match you to a record created in advance, or create one at the desk, and give you a sheet or a set of barcode labels. The sheet is how each station records that you have been seen.
2. Fasting blood and urine. A single venipuncture may cover a blood count, liver and kidney tests, lipids, glucose and, if they were ordered, tumour markers. A midstream urine sample often goes to a hatch beside the same room. If you cannot produce a sample yet, ask whether you may return after you have had water. Do not skip it silently.
3. Ultrasound while you are still fasting. Abdominal ultrasound is more informative when the gallbladder is not contracted around a meal. Thyroid ultrasound, if it is included, is often done in the same room. The person scanning may enter a preliminary note at once. That note is not the final report.
4. Something to eat, if the centre provides it. Some centres offer a simple meal once fasting tests are done. Others expect you to bring food or to buy it. Confirm this when you book, and follow any restriction that still applies, especially if a later test needs an empty stomach after all.
5. Imaging and a resting ECG, if they are part of your package. A low-dose chest CT, when it has been agreed, is a short scan with breath-holding instructions. It is still ionising radiation. Pregnancy, previous scans and the reason for doing it belong in the conversation before you arrive, not in the changing room. A resting ECG is a recording, not a clean bill of cardiac health.
6. Measurements and a brief physical examination. Height, weight, blood pressure, vision and intraocular pressure appear in many packages. A clinician may listen to the heart and lungs and look at the mouth. This is a screening pass. It is not a specialist consultation.
7. Hand the sheet back. A nurse checks that every station you were assigned has a mark. You leave with the method the hospital uses for results: a portal, a later pickup, or both. You do not leave with every line already final.
What happens after you leave
While you are at lunch or on a train, different parts of the laboratory and the imaging service finish at different speeds. As a pattern, not as a promise:
- Simple urine chemistry and a blood count are often among the earlier items.
- Chemistry panels and the ultrasound text often follow.
- A signed CT report, tumour markers and any translated summary are often later, and a final physician summary later still.
Ask for three things in writing: which items you will be able to see before you fly, which items may still be pending, and who phones you if something should not wait. If a result is abnormal, the pathway may be an explanation, a booked specialist visit, or urgent assessment. Before you leave China, confirm the urgency, any travel advice, the likely cost of the next step, and how your doctor at home can receive the original report and the images.
Practical points that save a wasted lap of the corridor
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Signs are only in Chinese | Follow the room numbers on the routing sheet. Staff at the corridor desk are used to pointing. A translation app helps for a direction. It is a poor tool for consent. |
| Metal on your clothes | A soft top and trousers without zips or metal draws let you stay in your own clothes for an ECG or a CT. Confirm there is no remaining restriction on the sheet. |
| No urine sample at the first attempt | Tell the station. Complete what you can, drink if you are allowed to, and return before you hand the sheet back. |
| A dry mouth from fasting | Follow the written rule on water. Do not invent an exception because a blog said a sip was fine. |
| You do not speak Mandarin | Say so when you book. Some centres provide a coordinator or a translated sheet, and some do not. The circuit being visual does not mean you will understand a result. |
Where PriumCare fits in China
We handle the part that is administrative. Where that support is confirmed in your service scope, PriumCare can help you obtain the hospital's preparation sheet in a language you can use, request the appointment, arrange someone to walk the stations with you or to be on call, and collect the reports and images afterwards so your own doctor can read them.
We do not diagnose, we do not treat, and we do not decide which stations you should add on the morning. The hospital's clinicians do. The hospital's quote governs what you pay. PriumCare does not mark up hospital fees.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do this if I speak no Mandarin?
You can complete a visual, barcode-led circuit more easily than a consultation, and you can still misunderstand a result or a consent. Book language support if you want someone to confirm each step and to read the report with you. Do not treat gestures as informed consent.
Can I add a low-dose chest CT on the morning itself?
Sometimes, if the scanner has capacity and a clinician agrees it is appropriate for you. It is not an automatic extra. Age, smoking, symptoms, pregnancy and previous imaging all matter. Ask about suitability, price and when the report will be signed, before you are in the gown.
Will a chest CT leave me tired for the rest of the day?
A low-dose chest CT is commonly done without contrast and without sedation. Tiredness is not the usual direct effect. The decision to do the scan, and any restriction afterwards, still belongs to the clinician. Mention pregnancy, symptoms and previous radiation exposure before you proceed, and follow the hospital's advice after you leave.
What if the routing sheet and this article disagree?
Follow the sheet and the staff. This article describes a common order so you know what kind of morning to expect. It is not an instruction to the hospital.
Can I go to a meeting after the last station?
Only if nothing you did requires recovery, and only once staff have taken the sheet back and told you that you are finished. Sedation, contrast, a longer-than-expected queue or an abnormal finding that they want you to discuss can all change the afternoon. Keep it free until you know.
