Medical Care in Chengdu: A Guide for International Visitors
Decide what the visit is for
An existing diagnosis, a new symptom, a preventive checkup and a TCM consultation need different preparation. Tell the institution which question you want answered and provide the records it requests. Choosing Chengdu does not establish which department should see you or whether a procedure is appropriate.
Local hospitals publish patient instructions, including routes for foreign passport holders. These are institution-specific. An international-department process at one hospital should not be assumed to apply to another hospital's ordinary outpatient clinic.
Get a written route through the appointment
Ask for the institution's full Chinese name, campus, department, registration reference and accepted identification. Confirm whether the service can provide consultation in your language or whether an interpreter must be arranged separately. Ask how written reports and imaging will be supplied afterwards.
| Practical issue | Confirm before travel |
|---|---|
| Registration | Passport spelling, accepted booking channel and arrival instructions |
| Department | Exact service and whether records need review before an appointment |
| Payment | Itemised quotation, deposits, card acceptance and any direct-billing approval |
| Follow-up | Pending tests, return appointment and contact route after departure |
If a city visit also includes travel elsewhere in Sichuan, keep that itinerary separate from the clinical plan. Ask the treating clinician about fitness for onward travel and activity. A travel coordinator should not make that medical decision or promise that all results will be ready before your departure.
Check the boundary of language and TCM services
A hospital may offer TCM and conventional services, but the appropriate treatment still requires a clinical assessment. Bring a complete medicine and supplement list, including herbal products. Ask the clinician about interactions and how the plan will be communicated to the clinician who continues your care at home.
English-language help at registration does not guarantee an English report or an interpreter at every investigation. Specify the support needed for consent and for understanding instructions, not only for finding the consultation room.
Questions patients ask
Can a passport be used to register?
Ask the chosen institution for its current foreign-patient process. Use your own identification and keep its spelling consistent across records.
Is a TCM visit suitable for everyone?
No general travel guide can decide that. Ask the treating clinician about the proposed approach, medicines and alternatives.
Will international insurance pay directly?
Only if the exact policy, service and institution have been confirmed. An insurance logo or international-department name is not sufficient.
Should I leave immediately after the appointment?
Ask when results will be available and whether the clinician expects a further visit. Medical fitness to travel is a separate question for the treating team.
